GOLD TESTING - A Poorman's Densimeter
« on: October 03, 2012, 09:33:02 PM »
Peace!

Replicated the design from this website , http://goldsilvertools.com/densimeter/  .....

materials needed:

-digital scale 2 digit accurate
-tupperwares  ;)
-distilled water
and of course gold to be tested

given:
             AIR WEIGHT = 17.73 AND 17.76   - averaging = 17.745 grams
             WATER WEIGHT/VOLUME = 0.91 AND 0.92  - averaging = 0.915 grams or cm3

solution:

             17.75 divided by 0.92 =  19.29 GRAMS/CM3

THEREFORE:    19.32 grms/cm3 density of pure gold against 19.29 grms/cm3 of my gold

EQUALS :
                     0.998 percente = 23.96k rounded to 24K

heres some pics:

Thanks for the post. I am wondering how accurate can it be? I checked the original post which looks not very accurate though. 10.57g/cm3 which even heavier than real silver 10.49g/cm3. I don't think that +/-0.3 (=2.86%)  is acceptable.

in my opinion, this is much better than manually calculating the volume of the object by its dimension and the water displacement method......what if the object is irregular in shape?.... so far, in my testing for 1.78gram to 2 gram gold,,,, this method is not accetable.... im hypothesizing that minimum of 3 grams gold will give a better result....

when i transacted the sample gold.... the commercial densimeter says its 24k indeed,,,but not so pure, and im expecting that coz i used nitric only.....

sir, are you familiar on the Commercial Densimeter and its workings?........

coz im finished replicating it mechanically. testing on less than 3 grams is conclusive so far.... im waiting for a 10 grams or more....

Thanks

this two, a combination, is the densimeter im replicating mechanically using only a cheap digital two digit scale...

this commercial densimeter ranges from 30 thousand to 100 thousand i guess.... and will easily worn out due to its sensitivity...

in my version, 1400 worth of digital scale can be replaced easily...

this two pictures are from the internet...

for conclusion:

homebuilt VOLUME METER,  is only accurate in 10 grams and above gold, in solid form...jewelries are much complicated to test using this meter....

while the homebuilt DENSITY METER (DENSIMETER) is accurate even in 1 gram jewelry or solid gold...

this are my personal observation only....
