Metal detectorists have made many amazing discoveries down the years in Britain, with a great hoard of 2,600 coins just revealed last month. But there are strict rules regarding archaeological finds made by detectorists. At present, there is a case before the court in Britain where four men are accused of conspiring to conceal and illegally sell a treasure, found by metal detectors.

When Metal Detecting Becomes a Crime
At Worcester Crown Court four men are on trial, accused of stealing a treasure that is worth up to $3.6 million (£3 million). According to the Daily Telegraph , “George Powell, 38, and Layton Davies, 51, are accused of failing to declare a hoard of 1,000 year-old buried valuables they unearthed”. Both men have addresses in Wales.

The pair are experienced metal detectorists and it is alleged that they found a valuable hoard, in a field, near Leominster, Herefordshire. The field is part of the Eye Court Farm. Video: https://www.ancient-origins.net/news-general/metal-detectorists-0012674
There are no ancient secrets to decoding the past, there is only great research and applied logic.

That's one of the things about the (Not so any more ) Great Britain ak United Kingdom.  The key here is Kingdom.  Where everything belongs to the King or Queen.  It's called the King's property.  All of the entire coast of England belongs to the Royal Family.  Bla Bla Bla.  That's why the Colonists got rig of The King.  Thus the King or Queen in lieu of no King, can say who gets what ans so on.  All buried objects are the property of the King unless the King makes other declarations.  The problem with these guys is they were detecting on someones property without telling the land owner.  Found something, ran away with out not telling the land owner.  Like in the PH.  You have a rice field, some guys come onto in in the night, find a box of gold bars and run away not telling the rice field owner and then laugh at the guy when safe away.

Obviously this is totally lost because after 1,000 years if the heirs made no attempt to recover then it is lost.  But we have the Spanish government chasing people who find ships lost for 500 years and demand all the gold back when they made no effort to look bla bla bla.

This find is not like a box of 6.2 Burmas, this tells more of a story with the coins and is part of the people history of the area.  OK fine you find something.  Catalog it, photograph it discover the story behind it and let the people know because it is part of the cultural history of the area.  Then divide it up as the land owner and finder agree.  If the government there wishes to purchase it, fine if the finders want to sell and for a price everyone sells in most cases.

But the King !  But the Queen !

I was involved in a land purchase in Scotland a few years ago but at the last moment backed out.  Over there is what is called The Roaming Law.  Which means there is no private property rights.  People can walk all over your property day and night any time and poke around.  Even metal detect but not dig any thing up.  They can walk all around your house, barns, garage, tool shed etc., just not enter into the structures.  One day 12 people showed up with metal detectors running all around the house and buildings, can't stop them.  So I said NO WAY I'm out of here.
